JOHOR, 20 April 2026 – The SMART ECO-PV BOAT and Community Empowerment Project in Penyabung, Mersing, Johor Darul Ta’zim aims to enhance the socio-economic well-being of the local fishing community through sustainable and community-driven initiatives. Under the flagship SMART ECO-PV BOAT programme, 25 fishermen from Penyabung and Mersing will benefit from the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on their boats, helping to reduce diesel consumption, lower operating costs, and promote the adoption of clean energy in the fisheries sector. The project also serves as a knowledge-sharing platform involving Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and 10 educational and training institutions, engaging more than 100 students and lecturers in hands-on learning and community collaboration.
In addition, the project includes the installation of an awning roof at the old jetty storage building to provide a sheltered and more organised workspace for fish cage repair activities, benefiting 105 members of the Penyabung Fishermen Association. The initiative also supports income-generating activities among fishermen’s families by empowering two local entrepreneurs through business enhancement assistance. This includes upgrading facilities and equipment for salted fish and otak-otak production, enabling higher productivity, increased sales opportunities, and improved household income. Together, these initiatives reflect a holistic approach to sustainable community development and economic empowerment in Penyabung.
